Remove your wallpaper easily with these tips from your house painters in Newbury Park.
Removing wallpaper is never a fun task for homeowners. It’s largely time-consuming and can end up in a sticky mess. Even so, with the right tools and tips from your house painters in Newbury Park, anyone can rid a room of dated wall covering!
What you’ll need:
- Sheets of plastic drop cloths (the thick kind)
- A garden type sprayer (with a pump handle)
- Wallpaper scraper for plaster walls, a spackle knife for drywalls.
Beforehand:
Go to the circuit breaker or fuse box to turn off the electricity in the room where you will be removing wallpaper. Move furniture away from the walls and place plastic sheeting at the base of the wall, right against the baseboard. Ensure that all of your rugs, carpet, tiles, and floorboards are completely covered to prevent water damage or glue sticking to the floor. If your furniture is still in the room, cover them with plastic sheets.
Removing the wallpaper:
- Score the lines on the surface of the wallpaper so that the water solution can get under and through the wallpaper.
- Fill the sprayer with two parts hot water and one part white vinegar.
- Spray the walls in the room. Wait 15-20 minutes and then spray the walls again.
- Once the wallpaper is saturated, use your razor scraper or spackling knife to start removing the paper. If you find that the glue is too hard, spray the walls once more.
- Once the wallpaper is off, it’s time to remove the glue. Remove it as soon as possible after taking the wallpaper off so that the glue is still wet. Use a wet rag followed by a clean, dry towel.
- Use a razor or scraper to scrape off the rest of the glue.
- Let the wall dry thoroughly before painting. Fans will help this happen faster.
- When the walls are dry, apply an oil base primer/sealer. Use a respirator when applying this to protect your health! If you can, get the family and the pets out of the house during this application process.
- When the primer is completely dry, any repairs can be made!
