how to Paint Over Wallpaper

Are you tempted to paint over wallpaper in your home? Here’s what you need to know.

Painting over wallpaper is considered to be a tricky chore. While many rip it off rather than painting over it, others cover up the issue with a solution – literally. It is possible to paint over wallpaper, but does it make sense for you?

Before selecting the paint and readying the paintbrush, there are some things that you need to take into account. You will need to check out the present condition of the wallpaper. Make a point to check whether there are any loose segments or other problems such as bubbling or peeling. Anything that is already visible will be highlighted when painted over. If there is tearing or peeling of the paper already, it’s best to remove it. If you find the wallpaper in good shape, you can consider painting over it.

Smooth It Out

Always use a sealer when painting on top of the wallpaper. By doing so, you’re making sure that the paint is safe from moisture-related issues. Before painting wallpaper that has a few tears, you’ll need to sand it smooth. Once this is done, apply adhesives to take care of the curling edges as well as the areas that are torn.

Use Oil-Based Primers

Make sure that you rely on oil-based primers when painting over wallpaper. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t use water-based paints, as they will loosen the wallpaper, which could cause the paper to peel and fall away from the wall.

Double Up

When painting over patterned wallpaper, it’s best to use a couple of coats of paint to ensure there is no transparency. Liberally apply one coat and allow it to dry before starting the second coat.
